For 20 years, we have edited and published the Jewish Women’s Literary Annual. Young and old Jewish women: established, well known poets and writers as well as talented beginners have appeared together in its pages and read to each other at the annual book-launch party; in English, but sometimes in Hebrew, Yiddish, French, German - with English translation. Some of the works have later developed into books, brought out by good publishers, to high critical praise.
Reflecting on the value of the JWLA, one can say that for many the Annual represents an important manifestation of our culture. Its pages communicate the creativity and excellence of both celebrated and emerging Jewish women writers and poets. The books represent a serious body of work.
Henny Wenkart has carried the expense of this enterprise from the beginning - supporting a highly professional endeavor and philanthropic pursuit to advance the Jewish literary arts, the creativity of Jewish women writers, and the overall enrichment of our Jewish culture and community. We hope other funders and foundations will insure the future of the Jewish Women’s Literary Annual well into the 21st Century in traditional book form as well as in on-line and on-demand publications.
This moment represents an opportunity to insure both the continuity of the publication and the possibility of a forward-looking mechanism to support the arts and Jewish women's literary expression. It also means that thousands of readers – Jewish and non-Jewish – will continue to share in and appreciate the value. Let's guarantee the future of the Jewish Women's Literary Annual for all to enjoy.
